Ear piercing for children

Ear piercing for children aged 7 and up – gentle, safe, and professional at MAYDUNA Berlin

Getting their first ear piercing is a very special moment for many children—and a small but significant step toward self-expression. To ensure this moment is a positive memory, it requires sensitive guidance, hygienic safety, and genuine expertise. At the MAYDUNA Studio in Berlin, we offer ear piercing for children aged seven and older—performed gently and responsibly, with a clear focus on quality and well-being.

In this post, we provide a comprehensive overview of our process, introduce the materials we use, and explain why we consciously choose not to use ear-piercing guns.

Why we require a minimum age of 7 years

The decision to get ear piercings should not be made lightly—especially when it comes to children. At MAYDUNA, we have deliberately set a minimum age of seven. By this age, children are usually able to understand the situation, ask questions, and provide their own informed consent. For us, the child is always the focus—not external expectations.

A conscious “yes” to getting their ears pierced is crucial: We want to ensure that young people feel comfortable and heard, and are able to process the experience well—not just physically, but emotionally, too. Physical changes such as a piercing should never be carried out against a child’s will or without their genuine involvement in the decision.

The ear piercing process at MAYDUNA Berlin

For us, ear piercing for children is a carefully coordinated process—carried out with plenty of patience, empathy, and professional care. Our goal is for children (and parents) to feel well-informed, safe, and valued at every step of the way.

1. Personal consultation

To begin with, a comprehensive preliminary consultation takes place with the parents and the child. We discuss all relevant information regarding materials, the healing phase, aftercare, and potential risks. Pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, and special needs are also addressed.

We ensure an objective, calm atmosphere for the conversation—free from pressure or expectations. The child is actively involved and can change their mind at any time. This openness is particularly important to us.

2. Child-friendly explanation and building trust

In a separate conversation, we dedicate specific time to the child. We explain the process in simple, understandable terms, and take any fears seriously, discussing them calmly. Our experienced piercers build trust with great sensitivity. We only proceed to the next step once the child feels truly comfortable.

3. Selecting the appropriate initial jewelry

For fresh piercings, we use exclusively sterilized initial jewelry made from high-quality, biocompatible materials:

  • Titanium (implant-grade): Hypoallergenic, lightweight, nickel-free – ideal for sensitive skin.
  • Solid gold (14 or 18 karat): Finely crafted, nickel-free, hypoallergenic, and fully sterilizable – in modern, child-friendly designs.

Our collection features a wide range of shapes and colors. We are happy to help select a piece of jewelry together with the child—one that appeals to them and fits their anatomy well—because individuality is the focus here, too.

4. Hygienic preparation to the highest standards

At MAYDUNA, hygiene and safety are non-negotiable. We work exclusively with sterile, single-use needles, disinfect all surfaces according to strict protocols, and wear sterile gloves—the same type used in surgery—throughout the entire piercing process. The highest standards of hygiene are our minimum requirement.

We do not use ear-piercing guns—for reasons of hygiene, precision, and tissue preservation. More on this shortly. Our specially designed rooms are quiet, tidy, and free from sensory overload—allowing the child to relax.

5. Precise marking of the position

Before the piercing, the desired placement of the ear holes is precisely determined and marked in consultation with the parents and the child. We proceed with great care, as precision is crucial for an aesthetically pleasing result.

We only move forward once everyone involved is satisfied—naturally, without any rush.

6. The piercing – gentle, precise, and child-friendly

The piercing is performed using a sterile piercing needle that gently parts the tissue—unlike the forceful impact of a piercing gun. This method causes significantly less trauma and promotes better healing. Upon request, both ear holes can be pierced simultaneously by two piercers; this shortens the duration of the procedure and helps many children feel more secure.

7. Aftercare & Care Instructions

Afterwards, parents and child receive comprehensive aftercare instructions and a care product for the coming weeks—explained verbally and provided in writing. We explain what needs to be observed and how complications can be avoided, and we are, of course, available to answer any questions.

Regular checks and gentle care are crucial for proper wound healing—and for ensuring you continue to enjoy your earrings in the long run.

Why we don’t use ear-piercing guns

Although ear piercing is still common in some drugstores or jewelry shops, in our view it is not a modern method—as it entails significant risks:

1. Lack of precision

When a piercing gun is used, the jewelry is forced through the tissue at high speed; this does not create a clean puncture channel but rather causes crushing. This type of injury heals poorly and can remain permanently sensitive.

2. Hygiene problem

Ear-piercing guns are usually made of plastic or metal parts that cannot be fully sterilized. Germs can adhere to them and be transmitted from one client to another—an unnecessary risk, especially for children.

3. Pain & Shock

The loud noise and the sudden sensation of pressure can be frightening for children. Many find this process painful or traumatic—with a long-term negative impact on future medical experiences.

4. Low jewelry quality

The studs used for piercing are often made of cheap alloys containing nickel or chromium—common allergens. They are completely unsuitable for sensitive children’s skin.

5. No personal jewelry

Ears vary in shape, size, and thickness. One-size-fits-all options rarely provide a perfect fit; a custom-adjusted length is crucial—especially during the healing phase—to prevent pressure and irritation.

Our materials – safe, high-quality, and child-friendly

Titanium – proven & skin-friendly

Titanium is a proven material in the medical and piercing industries. It is lightweight, rust-proof, nickel-free, and extremely well-tolerated. As initial jewelry, titanium is particularly suitable for children with sensitive skin or a tendency towards allergies.

Real gold – luxurious & durable

We also offer high-quality initial jewelry made of 14- and 18-karat gold. This jewelry features a smooth finish, is hypoallergenic, and—like our titanium jewelry—is sterilized; it is available in delicate designs, child-friendly shapes, or with sparkling details such as Swarovski stones or small diamonds.

Child-friendly piercing with heart

At MAYDUNA, we view piercing not merely as a service, but as a responsibility. The first ear stud is a special occasion—and it should take place in an atmosphere that conveys safety, trust, and appreciation.

Our Berlin studio is fully accessible, features a welcoming interior, and is intentionally designed to minimize sensory overload. You won’t find loud music, a hectic atmosphere, or a chaotic environment here. Instead, we create a space for calm, focus, and a caring approach to every single person—young or old.

Important information for parents before the appointment

Before having their ears pierced, the child should be healthy and free from infection, as the immune system plays a crucial role in the healing process. Any skin irritation, open wounds, or chronic skin conditions in the ear area should also be assessed beforehand.
